Brussels Design September 2024

12/09/2024

Every year I look forward to Brussels Design September and in 2024 its start (12 September) pleased me with interesting, innovative, exciting projects, which I will be happy to talk about in my reports. The opening took place at the Dominican Hotel (once the Dominican Convent) in the heart of Brussels.

Today, festival number 18 has a female face, and a beautiful one at that – art director Elizabeth Djamdjiev (pictured left), a graduate of ‘La Cambre’, an interior designer and ceramic conservator, an experienced art manager.

The festival connects professional and amateur designers, workshops and local communities, collectors and visionaries. This year it emphasises the inextricable link between art and design, their interpenetration and intertwining. Over 100 design events – Urban design and Commerce design, the Design Awards competition. Design lectures and conferences will be held at Flagey. The traditional Design Market has been moved to 16-17 November. New brands, galleries, projects and, of course, established and successful names on the European and Belgian art and design scene await you.

Sammy Baloji – a solo exhibition at Kunsthal Extra City, Antwerp

On 17 April, a solo exhibition by Sammy Baloji arrived -like a mnemonic vessel of historical memory - at Kunsthal Extra City in Antwerp, a former Dominican monastery now functioning as a contemporary art space. The exhibition settles seamlessly into the interiors of...

Marina Yee – the final confessional interview at Sofie Van De Velde

Marina Yee - the most “little-known” member of the world-famous Antwerp Six - not for any lack of God-given talent. A girl who grew up in Congo, where her father worked as a colonial official, she showed an early gift for drawing and for altering clothes. Her family...

The bicentenary of the Val Saint Lambert Crystal Works

The history of the Val Saint-Lambert crystal manufactory deserves a place in school history textbooks at the intersection of eras and revolutions. A Cistercian abbey, founded in the Middle Ages near the town of Seraing, was closed by the passionate agents of the...
