Francis Metzger is the architect for the renovation of Villa Empain

23/01/2025

Brussels’ Art Deco jewel Villa Empain, the creation of legendary architect Michel Polak, vandalised in the second half of the 20th century, would not look so luxurious today if its restoration had not been undertaken by a meticulous talent like contemporary architect Francis Metzger. On 22 January 2025, the Boghossian Foundation (and Ville is finally lucky enough to have such a caring owner) invited the maestro to reveal the secrets of restoration worthy of a fascinating Dan Brown-style book. Francis Metzger spoke about all the intricacies of this unique project. His presentation was a fascinating journey behind the scenes of the restoration work, full of unexpected stories, challenges and inspiration.

How was it possible to restore the splendour of the legendary Villa Empain, one of the most striking Art Deco masterpieces in Brussels? How many sheets of gold leaf did it take to restore the brass corners of the façade? What methods did the restorers use to work with rare exotic woods? And how was it possible to create harmony between the rooms decorated with d’Escalette marble and Jourdan wood?

Francis Metzger is a distinguished Belgian architect specialising in the restoration of architectural heritage. Head of the MA2 office, President of the French-speaking Council of the Order of Architects and member of the Royal Commission on Monuments and Sites. Recipient of four Europa Nostra awards, including awards for the restoration of Villa Empain and Royale Belge. He is also a professor and former dean of ULB.
